Soldier, soldier, will you marry me,
With your knapsack, fife and drum?
"Oh, how can I marry
Such a pretty girl as you,
When I've got no coat to put on?"
So she ran away
To the village tailor's shop,
As fast as she could run,
And she bought him a coat,
Oh, the best that she could buy,
And the soldier put it on.

Soldier, soldier, will you marry me,
With your knapsack, fife and drum?
"Oh, how can I marry
Such a pretty girl as you,
When I've got no shoes to put on?"
So she ran away
To the shoemaker's shop,
As fast as she could run,
And she bought him some shoes,
Oh, the best that she could buy,
And the soldier put them on.

Soldier, soldier, will you marry me,
With your knapsack, fife and drum?
"Oh, how can I marry
Such a pretty girl as you,
When I've got no hat to put on?"
So she ran away
To the village hatter's shop,
As fast as she could run,
And she bought him a hat,
Oh, the best that she could buy,
And the soldier put it on.

Soldier, soldier, will you marry me,
With your knapsack, fife and drum?
"Oh, how can I marry
Such a pretty girl as you,
When I've got no gloves to put on?"
So she ran away
To the glovemaker's shop,
As fast as she could run,
And she bought him some gloves,
Oh, the best that she could buy,
And the soldier put them on.

Soldier, soldier, will you marry me,
With your knapsack, fife and drum?
"Oh, how can I marry
Such a pretty girl as you,
When I've got a good wife at home?"
So she ran away
Just as fast as she could run,
To tell her Mom and Dad,
And they gave her a hug,
As they told their pretty girl,
That she had just been had!

Formation:

Children join hands and form a circle. Two children are selected to play the parts of the boy and the girl, and two to play the parts of Mom and Dad. The boy and girl go to the center of the ring. The little girl sings the first half of the verse, and the little boy the second. When he says he has no coat to put on, the girl borrows one from a child in the circle, continuing to borrow items for each verse. In the last verse, the girl runs to her parents, who give her a hug while Dad shakes his finger at the soldier.
