The Noble Duke of York (A Hunting We Will Go)
Written By: Unknown
Copyright Unknown
Verse 1:
Oh, the noble Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill and
Marched them down again
Verse 2:
And when you're up, you're up
And when you're down, you're down
And when you're only half way up
You're neither up nor down
Verse 3:
Oh, a-hunting we will go
A-hunting we will go
We'll catch a little fox
And put him in a box
And then we'll let him go
GAME 1
Use verses 1 and 2.
Children sit in chairs or squat, and do the following actions:
For Verse 1:
10,000 men - raise arms high with fingers outstretched
up - stand up
down - sit down
For Verse 2:
Repeat actions for "up" and "down". On "halfway up", assume crouching or squatting position.
GAME 2 (A-Hunting We Will Go)
Use verses 1 and 3.
Children form a circle, with hands joined. One child stands outside the circle and is the "fox". For verse 1, children dance in a circle to the left as the fox skips to the right.
For verse 3, the two children closest to the fox lift their arms and force him into the circle by bringing an arch down on either side of him. The children slowly close the circle to trap the fox. On the words "let him go," the children raise their arms and let the fox escape. He then chooses another fox and the game starts all over.
GAME 3:
Use Verse 3.
Children form into two lines. The first (head) couple leads the partners as they march across the room. When they get to the other side, they separate, with one line going right, and the other going left. The two lines march back to the other end of the line where the partners meet. The head couple then forms an arch through which the other couples march. This creates a new head couple, and the game continues until all children have had a turn as head couple.
